Section scores that hold their fold

Pick a section off your folder and look for the score. If you have to tilt it to the light to find the line, that ghost of a mark is all the fold has to follow.

Weak scores make weak folds. Sections spring back open on the pallet, gusset and wrinkle at the head, and fight the gatherer, stitcher or sewing machine instead of running through it. So the bindery slows to the pace of its worst-folded section, and the folder operator gets the blame for a line the scoring collar never really made.

It is the same steel scoring that cracks colour on covers. On section work, its one setting fails the other way: too shallow to define the fold. This is what is causing it, and what replaces it:
