Stop your stitched books cracking — fit perfect, cylinder-quality creases straight off your saddle stitcher.

Transform your saddle stitcher into a powerful cylinder-creasing machine. The Spine-Creaser fits onto your existing cover feeder and produces the perfect letterpress crease in minutes — no more sending covers out, no more tying up your cylinder, and no more cracked spines.

Inline spine creasing of saddle-stitched book covers — simply cut your covers, load them in the cover feeder, and crease as you stitch.

Watch the Spine-Creaser at work

There is no single way to fit a Spine-Creaser. Saddle stitchers, stitching lines and cover feeders vary enormously between makers and generations, so each installation is engineered around your machine's own mounting points. Here are two popular installations in action:

The problem

The problem we solve

Coated and laminated covers crack along the spine when they are scored on a standard cover-feeder score wheel — and a cracked spine is one of the biggest sources of customer dissatisfaction in saddle stitching. Every operator knows the anxiety: "Will my cover feeder score the covers cleanly, or will I have to send them out, pull the job from the stitcher and shuffle my whole schedule? Will we get away with how bad this spine looks, or is it another rejection disaster? Is my night shift even going to look at the covers, or will I arrive to find crooked, mis-registered, cracked covers — and a job to reprint, pull off by hand and re-stitch from scratch?" The Spine-Creaser ends that worry.

Why the OEM way fails

Why the standard factory method falls short

The score wheel fitted to your cover feeder cuts rather than creases — it scratches a line into the surface, and on coated, laminated or digital stocks that line cracks the moment the cover is folded round the spine. That is why so many printers resort to a separate offline scoring pass, tie up a cylinder press, or send the work out altogether.

It is like substituting your cover feeder for a Heidelberg cylinder letterpress. Using the same patented technology as the Tri-Creaser, the Spine-Creaser produces results that equal or surpass those of any cylinder.

Independently researched

The Spine-Creaser is built on Tech-ni-Fold's patented creasing technology — the same principle proven on thousands of Tri-Creasers worldwide — now engineered for the saddle stitcher's cover feeder.

How it works

How the Spine-Creaser works

Installation takes less than 30 minutes. Using a set of Allen keys, your operator removes the existing score wheel from the cover feeder, applies the rubber creasing matrix to the drum, and attaches the new double-wheel Spine-Creaser with a single bolt. No machine modification is needed — it fits onto your existing components — and you are producing perfect cylinder-quality creases on your saddle stitcher straight away.

A hardened male wheel presses the cover into a rubber female matrix. The matrix provides equal, constant pressure and helps guide the book squarely round the drum — so instead of cutting the surface, it crushes a clean channel into the stock: a folded crease that will not crack.

The patented combination produces a cylinder-quality crease — or better — every time, and handles all types of coated, laminated and digital cover stocks.

The payback

It pays for itself in 1–3 runs

The simple installation pays for itself in remarkably few jobs. After the initial investment, the Spine-Creaser costs a minimum of only £15 per 600,000 copies — breaking even at around £1,447 against the steadily rising cost of running covers through a cylinder.

What printers say

Witherby's have purchased a full range of Tech-ni-Fold products over the years and I can honestly say they have paid for themselves many times over. The quality of the product and the results we have achieved on folders and Muller lines have been superb. I honestly cannot recommend these products highly enough.

James Green · Witherby & Co Ltd

We received the Spine-Creaser attachment this morning and it went right in without any problems. The before and after on the cover spines is so dramatic that everyone from our sales department is floored!

Erik Flint · Concord Litho

Just a line to say we have done two jobs using the CP Applicator. Delighted! Saved 15 hours work on the Heidelberg cylinder between them, and it frees up a man.

Peter Meggitt · Northwolds Printers

We have just completed our second job with the Micro-Perforator and have already recovered the cost we paid for it. Now we can complete work quicker, with superior results than previously, and with a lot more control.

Phil Fredericks · Wood Mitchell Printers

We had a difficult job and the outside looked great but the inside was flaking. I ordered a new Tri-Creaser Advance, was so impressed, I ordered two more the next day. They really work great. We delivered that job on time and it saved us from getting a letterpress score and missing a deadline.

Jim Navulis · Haapanen Brothers

Action Print Finishers are pleased with the purchase of your Spine-Creaser. Previously we could only crease to the maximum of 250gsm and at times not very successfully as we were experiencing cracking, particularly when creasing across the grain. With your creasing unit we are able and confident to crease any job up to 400gsm with not a sign of cracking, both with and across the grain.

For digital printers

Built for digital print finishing

Equally at home on digitally-printed covers — the crushed crease will not crack toner-heavy or laminated digital stocks the way a score wheel does, so even short digital cover runs come off the stitcher clean.
